Coral cover, and the sentence beside it
A global coral report landed today with one number on the front of it and, a few pages in, a sentence from its own authors saying that number is not the condition of a reef. The second sentence is the one worth keeping.
Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025, the seventh report from the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network, rests on 21.1 million observations from 36,886 reef sites across 124 countries and territories. It reports a 9.5 percent relative decline in global hard coral cover since historical levels, from 30.2 percent in the 1980 to 2009 reference period to 27.3 percent in 2020 to 2024.
Then this, from the authors: hard coral cover alone does not fully represent reef condition, and sustained long-term monitoring of a broader set of indicators, including macroalgae, which remains low globally, is essential to detect change, attribute drivers and manage adaptively.
Forty years of building one indicator, a day of the world's attention, and they used part of it to write down what the indicator does not carry. It is the sentence a specification should be built on rather than the percentage.
